WARMStones: Benchmarking Wide-Area Resource Management Schedulers
نویسنده
چکیده
Researchers have proposed hundreds of algorithms for solutions to the distributed scheduling, or matching, problem. However, few of these algorithms have been implemented, and the primary analysis has either been purely theoretical or with limited simulation. There has been little or no performance analysis of these algorithms under realistic workloads. The result is that it is impossible to compare algorithms and to determine which work well in practice. We propose to build a benchmarking system for matching algorithms with the following properties: (1) the system will use real, existing high-performance computing applications as a basis for the benchmark suite, (2) we will provide a scheduler implementation toolkit, allowing researchers to implement their algorithms in isolation from dependencies on particular scheduling support systems, and (3) we will simulate the execution of the matching algorithm on a variety of heterogeneous distributed system architectures. The result will be that we can assess the strengths and weaknesses of individual scheduling algorithms in a uniform manner, thus allowing comparison of algorithm performance under realistic workloads.

Self-tuning job scheduling strategies for the resource management of HPC systems and computational grids
In this thesis we develop and study self-tuning job schedulers for resource management systems. Such schedulers search for the best solution among the available scheduling alternatives in order to improve the performance of static schedulers. In two domains of real world job scheduling this concept is implemented. First of all, we study the scheduling in resource management software for high pe...
متن کاملA Federated Model for Scheduling in Wide-Area Systems
In this paper a model for scheduling in wide-area systems is described. The model is federated and utilizes a collection of local site schedulers that control the use of their resources. The wide-area scheduler consults the local site schedulers to obtain candidate machine schedules. A set of issues and challenges inherent to wide-area scheduling are also described and the proposed model is sho...
متن کاملRobust Mouldable Scheduling Using Application Benchmarking for Elastic Environments
In this paper we present a framework for developing an intelligent job management and scheduling system that utilizes application specific benchmarks to mould jobs onto available resources. In an attempt to achieve the seemingly irreconcilable goals of maximum usage and minimum turnaround time this research aims to adapt an open-framework benchmarking scheme to supply information to a mouldable...
متن کاملComparison of the Three CPU Schedulers in Xen
The primary motivation for enterprises to adopt virtualization technologies is to create a more agile and dynamic IT infrastructure — with server consolidation, high resource utilization, the ability to quickly add and adjust capacity on demand — while lowering total cost of ownership and responding more effectively to changing business conditions. However, effective management of virtualized I...
متن کاملOn the efficacy, efficiency and emergent behavior of task replication in large distributed systems
Large distributed systems challenge traditional schedulers, as it is often hard to determine a priori how long each task will take to complete on each resource, information that is input for such schedulers. Task replication has been applied in a variety of scenarios as a way to circumvent this problem. Task replication consists of dispatching multiple replicas of a task and using the result fr...
